Arnold Press: A Rotating Shoulder Press for Full Deltoid Coverage

Adding a rotation to a standard shoulder press hits all three heads of the deltoid through a longer path.

· 2 min read

Arnold Press demonstration

The Arnold press takes a standard dumbbell shoulder press and adds a rotation at the bottom, trading some of the weight you can handle for a longer range that works more of the shoulder.

How to do it

  1. 1Start with palms facing youdumbbells at shoulder height, elbows in front of your body, like the top of a curl.
  2. 2Rotate as you pressturn your palms to face forward as you drive the dumbbells overhead.
  3. 3Extend fully at the toparms straight, dumbbells over your shoulders, without shrugging.
  4. 4Reverse the rotation on the way downturn your palms back to face you as you lower, retracing the same path.
  5. 5Return to the startdumbbells back at shoulder height, palms facing you, ready for the next rep.

Sets and reps

3 sets of 8–12 reps — the rotation adds a coordination demand, so start with lighter weight than you'd use for a standard shoulder press until the movement feels smooth.

Common mistakes

  • Rushing the rotation. Turning the wrists too fast or too late throws off the bar path and reduces how much of the shoulder actually works through the rotation.
  • Arching the lower back. Leaning back to help press the weight overhead shifts load to your spine. Keep your core braced and ribs down.
  • Skipping the full rotation. Only partially rotating the palms turns this back into a regular shoulder press and loses the exercise's main benefit.

Safety note

Master a standard dumbbell shoulder press first — this variation adds real coordination demands and is easier to learn once the pressing pattern itself is second nature.

The rotation is what makes this exercise worth doing over a standard press. Slow it down until it feels controlled, not just doable.
