Face Pulls: The Exercise That Saves Your Shoulders
Face pulls don't build a lot of visible muscle, but they do more for shoulder health than almost anything else in the gym. Here is how to do them properly so they actually work.
· 2 min read

The face pull targets the small muscles at the back of the shoulder that desk work and pressing-heavy training tend to neglect. It's not a glamorous exercise, but consistent, correct reps do real work toward keeping your shoulders healthy.
How to do it
- 1Set the cable at face height — attach a rope handle to a cable set roughly level with your face.
- 2Grip and step back — hold the rope with both hands, palms facing each other, and step back to create tension.
- 3Pull toward your face — draw the rope apart and toward your face, leading with your elbows high and wide.
- 4Rotate at the end — let your hands finish outside your ears, thumbs pointing back, as if flexing your rear shoulders.
- 5Return slowly — let the rope travel back out under control, resisting the weight the whole way.

3 sets of 12–15 reps with a light-to-moderate weight — this exercise works best light and controlled, not heavy.
Common mistakes
- Using too much weight. Face pulls lose their point at heavy loads — momentum takes over and the small stabilizer muscles get skipped. Go lighter than you think you need.
- Pulling straight to the chest instead of the face. This shifts the work toward the mid-back instead of the rear shoulders. Keep the pull high, toward eye or nose level.
- Skipping the external rotation at the end. The rotation at the finish is where a lot of the shoulder benefit comes from — don't cut the rep short.
Safety note
This exercise is generally low-risk and often used specifically to manage shoulder discomfort from pressing — but ease in gradually if you are new to it.
This is one to do often and lightly, not occasionally and heavy. Small, consistent volume is where the benefit comes from.
