Lateral Raise: Building Shoulder Width Without Straining Your Neck
The lateral raise is small-weight, high-technique work — the moment you use momentum, your traps take over and your side delts stop doing the job.
· 2 min read

The lateral raise is one of the most commonly overloaded exercises in the gym — going heavier than your side delts can actually lift just hands the work to your traps, which is exactly the muscle you don't want doing it.
How to do it
- 1Stand with a dumbbell in each hand — arms at your sides, a slight bend in the elbows, core braced.
- 2Raise to shoulder height — lift both arms out to the sides until they're roughly level with your shoulders.
- 3Lead with your elbows — think about lifting from your elbows rather than your hands, tilting the dumbbells slightly.
- 4Stop at shoulder height — going higher shifts work onto your traps rather than your side delts.
- 5Lower under control — take two to three seconds on the way down rather than dropping the weight.

3 sets of 12–15 reps with a weight light enough that your shoulders, not your traps, are doing the lifting for every rep.
Common mistakes
- Using momentum. Swinging the weight up with your body means it's too heavy for your side delts. Slow down and drop the load.
- Shrugging the weight up. Letting your traps lift your shoulders toward your ears takes the work away from your side delts. Keep your shoulders down.
- Raising above shoulder height. Going higher than shoulder level shifts the emphasis onto your traps for the top portion of the rep. Stop at shoulder height.
Safety note
This is a light-weight, high-rep exercise by design — resist the urge to chase the same load you'd use on a pressing movement.
Lighter than you think, slower than you want, and stopped at shoulder height — that combination is what actually builds width.
